A composite of five images from the stages of the January 20, 2019, total lunar eclipse.

The images are shown relative to the Earth's dark shadow, or umbra. When the moon enters the umbra, it begins to go dark. When it has moved completely into the umbra, totality has started, and the moon turns a blood red.

In this image the moon moves from right to left as it is seen to move East against the background stars.
