Rosette Nebula in H-alpha
Mojave Desert, California

This image of the Rosette Nebula is a 2x2 mosaic of four frames. It was recorded through an Ha (Hydrogen-alpha) filter (5nm) that passes only the red light emitted by excited hydrogen atoms in this large cloud of gas.

At its core of this emission nebula is open star cluster NGC 2244, which contains several super-hot O-type stars that excite the clouds of hydrogen and cause them to glow.
