Rho Ophiuchi Molecular Clouds, California

Rho Ophiuchi Molecular Clouds
White Mountains, Grandview Campground, California
EOS 7D Mark II   *   Rokinon 135mm f/2.0 ED UMC

These colorful glowing clouds surround the blue multiple star Rho Ophiuchi and bright orange Antares, in the constellations Ophiuchus and Scorpius, respectively. The bright globular star cluster Messier 4 (NGC 6121) is also prominent.

The blue and yellow areas are reflection nebulas, clouds of dust that reflect the color of nearby stars. The red areas are emission nebulas where excited hydrogen atoms are emitting red hydrogen-alpha light.

The darker brown areas are so-called dark nebulas, regions of thick dust that blocks the starlight behind them. All this is seen near the star-rich center of the Milky Way.

This is a stack of 36 separate 2.5 min exposures, for a total of 1.5 hr on a sky tracker. Rokinon 135mm f/2 lens at approximately f/4. ISO 3200. The images were stacked in PixInsight and adjusted in Lightroom.
