The curious Jocotoco Antpitta is named after its hooting call. It was in 1997 that an ornithologist with a deep memory of tropical bird calls heard a bird he didn't recognize, leading to one of the most recently added bird species in the world.

We made a special trip to southern Ecuador, where the bird is known only in a small protected area. On the ground are worms harvested by our guide. This meal drew this notoriously hidden bird into the open and almost too close to frame in my 70-200mm lens.
