Gentoo Penguins standing near their nesting colony. Gentoos are the second largest Falklands penguin, standing 2-3 feet tall. They can weigh as much as 20 pounds (8.5 kg). Their bright orange bills and white head patches are distinctive.

Because land predators such as seals are so cumbersome that they rarely approach their colonies, they tolerate the occasional photographer -- to a degree. For this wide angle shot from a foot away, I spent part of an hour lying on my stomach on the sandy, krill-stained ground, making no sudden moves. Eventually these two wandered over to get a look at me.
