The Santa Rita Lodge

Madera Canyon, Arizona

Broad-billed HummingbirdSituated in the Santa Rita Mountains of Southeast Arizona, Madera Canyon is renowned for its bird life and natural beauty. Although surrounded by desert, these "Sky Island" mountains rise up and form cool and moist havens for a variety of plants and animals, some of which reside nowhere else.

And hummingbirds abound! Fifteen species of hummers have been seen at the Santa Rita Lodge. During the week of our Workshop, we should be able to photograph wonderfully iridescent Broad-billed and Black-chinned Hummingbirds, and Magnificent and Blue-throated are also possible. Last year several Rufous paid a visit. Perhaps we'll even be graced by the occasional rarity!

High above the desert floor, in the Coronado National Forest, the Santa Rita Lodge is nestled along a mountain stream in an enchanting natural environment. The elevation and the shade from the trees create a sanctuary from the desert heat below. All rooms and cabins have kitchen facilities for your convenience.

At midday when the hummingbirds are resting, we can relax in our rooms, or retire to the picturesque Kent Springs Center, a newly remodeled facility where we can relax, discuss techniques, and review our work. The restaurants and stores of Green Valley are a scenic 20 minute drive away.

All in all, the Lodge is an ideal setting for our hummingbird photography experience, and a place you’ll no doubt long to visit again.
