Bosque del Apache: Snow Geese and Cranes
Thousands of Sandhill Cranes, tens of thousands of Snow Geese, and gorgeous New Mexico skies and mountains make this one of the most popular North American locations for bird photographers.
The eruption of Snow Geese by the thousands from their water roosts into the crimson sky of dawn is a sightand soundyou will never forget.
This National Wildlife Refuge preserves the remnants of vast wetlands that once existed here where the Rio Grande courses through New Mexico. It provides a winter sanctuary for thousands of majestic Sandhill Cranes, which make great photo subjects as they fly about the refuge.
Also present are numerous raptors as well as a variety of waterfowl, and Bald Eagles looking for a meal. Coyotes lurk on the edges of flocks, hoping to steal dinner.
We will stay in the nearby New Mexico town of Socorro. Well be sure to be at the refuge at first and last light, and can retire to our lodging at midday for lunch.
The best photo locations are just a few steps from our vehicle. Our group is kept small at six photographers. We provide plenty of in-the-field instruction and guidance for those who desire it, plus lots of unfettered shooting time for more experienced photographers.
With five full days for photography, you will have maximum opportunities to return home with wonderful images of the beauty and birds of Bosque.
