The Trifid Nebula is a star forming region of hot gas and dust in the Milky Way dominated by red emission from energetic hydrogen atoms.

The blue color is the reflection of blue star light on clouds of dust. The open cluster Messier 21 is the group of blue stars near the bottom of the frame.
