Black-chinned Hummingbird

Madera Canyon, Santa Rita Mts., Arizona

July, 1995

The Black-chinned Hummingbird is the smallest breeding hummingbird found in Madera Canyon. It is also one of the most challenging to light. Most of the time, it's chin really does appear black. But at just the right angle of light, the iridescent purple feathers at the base of the gorget (throat feathers) glow.
