Gorgeted Sunangel

Ecuador, Pacific slope, 7,500 feet

August, 2006

This view of a sunangel in partial profile is perhaps more "handsome" than the head-on shot. The iridescent purple gorget and green forehad patch are still visible, but they don't have that laser-like brightness that is almost blinding in a head-on view. These tiny hummingbirds were a lot of fun to photograph, because they almost never sat still, and were always tangling with other birds near the feeders.
