The New Canon EOS-1D Mark III DSLR

Canon has announced the EOS-1D Mark III DSLR, a 10.1 megapixel (MP), 10 frame per second (fps) digital SLR with a 1.3X crop factor. Besides blazing speed, the Mark III offers improved image quality, ISO speeds to 6400, improved autofocus, built-in sensor cleaning, user-friendlier controls and menu access, and more.

Expect to see it in April for just under $4,000, replacing the EOS-1D Mark IIn. An upgraded Speedlite 580EX II flash unit will replace the 580EX.

Should photographers use RAID arrays for image storage?

A reader asked ...

"I'm planning to expand my disk storage to accommodate all the image files from my digital cameras. What do you think of RAID storage options?"

My answer: I would recommend against RAID for most photographers. RAID, which stands for Redundant Array of Inexpensive (or Independent) Disks, combines several hard drives into a single unit. These drives appear as a single disk to the operating system, but different configurations (known as RAID levels) serve different purposes.

A better solution for photographers is a combination of multiple hard drives and write-once media (DVDs or CDs). But data backup is a critical issue for photographers, who can now store years of work on a single hard drive.
